How are your cakes made? Do you use a mix?

All of our cakes are made from scratch using the freshest ingredients like butter, eggs, and milk. A mix is never used. As a result, our cakes have that old fashioned like grandma used to make taste that everyone loves. Our cakes are also only made as they are ordered. We never bake cakes in bulk and then freeze them until an order comes along. That way you are always guaranteed a fresh cake that is reflected in its delicious taste.

Do I need to make an appointment?

If you are shopping for a wedding cake, I recommend that you make an appointment to meet with me to discuss the type of wedding cake you would like. During this appointment, you will be given the opportunity to taste cake samples. If you are shopping for a party cake, no appointment is required. However, you should contact me by phone or email at least 1 week (ideally 2 weeks) in advance of your special event to allow enough time for the planning of your cake design. Cake samples are available for party cakes for a fee.

How soon should I order my cake?

Because I am a small establishment and I personally tend to every order, I only schedule a certain number of cakes a weekend. For example, I never schedule more than 2 weddings a weekend. As such, I recommend that you reserve your wedding cake at least 3 to 6 months in advance of your wedding date (especially during the peak months of May-October). Booking this early will ensure that your date is not taken by someone else. For party cakes, I recommend that you place your order at least 1-2 weeks in advance of your event. That way if I am completely booked with other orders, you will have enough time to place your order with someone else.

What are your prices?

The pricing of my cakes are determined by the flavor and final design. However for a general guideline, they start at $3.75 per serving for wedding and grooms cakes, $2.00 per serving for party cakes, and $4.00 for decorated cookies. Please refer to the pricing page for more detailed information.

Do you require a deposit?

I require a $100.00 nonrefundable deposit to reserve the date for wedding cakes.  Final payment is due 2 weeks in advance of the event. For party cakes, I require a 50% deposit for orders that are over $50 for first time customers. Final payment is due upon pickup.

Do you deliver?

I deliver wedding cakes, grooms cakes, and large special event cakes for a nominal fee (which is based on distance from Columbia). For small wedding cakes, you do have the option of picking up the cake yourself. However if you choose to do so, you will be required to sign a waiver releasing Simply Desserts from liability if any damage to the cake occurs during transport. Pick ups of party cakes are scheduled between 10:00 and 2:00 on Saturday and must be done by appointment during the week. Pickups are never scheduled on Sundays

Can my cake be several different flavors?

All of my cakes consist of either 3 or 4 layers of cakes and 2or  3 layers of filling except for single layered sheet cakes which consist of 2 layers of cake and 1 layer of filling. Your multi tiered cake can be any cake and filling combination of your choice.

Can I have sheet cakes at my wedding?

For budget conscious brides, I can provide undecorated "kitchen" cakes as long as you purchase a decorated wedding cake that serves 125 persons. These "kitchen" cakes (like you wedding cake) will consist of 4 layers of cake and 3 layers of filling. Once sliced, "kitchen" cakes look just like your wedding cake and your guests will be none the wiser.

Can I get fake layers for my cake?

You can definitely get a fake layer for one or more of your cake tiers. Most brides choose to have a "fake" tier when they want to have the appearance of a larger cake without the additional number of servings. Please keep in mind though that adding "fake" tiers can significantly add to the final cost of your cake since a decorated "fake" tier is priced by the "serving" starting at $2.50/serving depending on the design.

Who provides the flowers for my cake?

If you want to have live flowers for your cake, most likely the florist will be responsible for providing and arranging them. On some occasions, I have provided and arranged live flowers. If you want to have silk or gum paste flowers I normally would provide (or you can provide the silk flowers) and arrange them for a fee.

Do you decorate the cake table or provide the decorations?

I do not supply the decorations or decorate the cake table unless prior arrangements have been made.

Do you rent cake stands?

I have several stands that are available for use free of charge when you order the cake. A security deposit is required for the use of all cake stands which is returned when the stands are returned to me.

Can I have an "Elmo" cake for my child's birthday?

Elmo, Dora the Explora, Clifford the Big Red Dog etc, are popular themes for children's birthdays. However, all of these characters are copyright protected and legally I cannot reproduce them. If you must have a copyrighted item on your cake, there are ways I can legally incorporate them into your design, such as purchasing edible images or figurines and toys that can be placed on the cake.
